Accommodation for climbing courses in Snowdonia
There are plenty of good bases for our courses in North Wales.
Betws y Coed area
Betws-y-Coed lies by the river Conwy a\nd is central to a lot of great climbing areas. There are many places to stay, plenty of local attractions and several outdoor shops. The town web site has an excellent search facility.
This lovely village is popular with those traveling by train from London, as it is one of the few Snowdonia towns with a rail link from the main line at Llandudno Junction on the coast.
Our village, Trefriw, is only 5 miles from Betws-y-Coed. It also lies by the Conwy Valley with easy access to the seaside and the mountains.
Hotels and B+B's
Many hotels - check out the town web site above as well as the normal review sites such as Trip Advisor and Late Rooms.
The 3 star Ty Gwyn gets good comments from those who have used it and is well positioned in the village.
The Tan-y-Foel is a highly commended 5 star hotel which is widely praised for the quality of it's food.
There are many B+Bs in the town and the ones which tend to get the best reviews are the Maes-y-Garth (4 stars), Afon Gwyn (5 stars), Tyn-y-Fron (5 star), Aberconwy House (5 Star) and Bryn Afon.
The Waterloo hotel on the edge of town is the safe choice as it is part of the Best Western chain. It has a sauna, pool and gym for those not wiped out by a day on the hill.
Bunkhouses
The Vagabond is a 3 start rated bunkhouse that has self-catering facilities. The rooms cater for groups of various sizes and there is a bar with good ale.
The Eagles Penmachno sleeps 29 people in 4 bunk rooms, has shared showers and cooking facilities. It gets great reviews.
Caravan parks & Campsites
Riverside Touring Park right in the centre of Betws-y-Coed is the most popular caravan site.
Cwmlanerch is just outside Betws-y-Coed on the way to Trefriw and it has a variety of accommodation options. It gets very good reviews
Capel Curig Area
Capel Curig is central to both the Llanberis and Ogwen Valleys and is a great base if you want fast access to most of Snowdonia. There are not many amenities here apart from the hotels and B+B's which can be good or bad depending on your perspective. However, there is an excellent Cafe - Moel Siabod - which we often use as a meeting point. There is also a very good outdoor climbing shop - Joe Brown - at the Llanberis / Bethesda end of the village.
Hotels & B+B's
The town has a web site that outlines all the accommodation options and attractions. The Bryn Trych Hotel tends to get pretty positive reviews from most people that stay and so does the Tyn-y-Coed Inn.
St Curig's Church is also interesting and has had good reviews from both the Guardian and the Sunday Times.
Ogwen Valley Campsites
The Dolgam campsite has plenty of flat space and it is just on the outskirts of Capel Curig, but all of the hotels and pubs are within 10 - 15 minutes walk.
The Gwern Gof Uchaf campsite lies in Ogwen Valley at the base of Tryfan and the Glyders. Gwern Gof Uchaf also has a bunkhouse. Remote, but lovely location. The very similarly named Gwern Isaf campsite also lies in the valley and is a little closer to Capel Curig, but Gwern Gof Uchaf tends to get better reviews.
All North Wales campsites can suffer from midgets on still days during the summer; remember to bring some midge repellant.
Tremadog
This brilliant climbing area is south facing, sheltered and low altitud. It is an all year round climbing venue and many areas are just a few minutes walk from the parking spot. Located above the A 487 itself, there is plenty of Airbnb accommodation in the village of Tremadog itself as well as in the biggest nearest towns of Beddgelert and Portmadog.
The Llyn Gwynant campsite is very good, not far from Beddgelert at the head of Llyn Gwynant.
There is extensive information at www.gonorthwales.co.uk - This is a very comprehensive guide to Snowdonia and other areas of North Wales.
