Rock Climbing in Spain - Climbing Outside

Sport climbing at Yugoslavia (Villanueva del Cauche)The Climbing Outside course is designed for those people who have some experience of climbing on indoor walls and would like to gain the extra knowledge needed to start climbing outside safely.

The most common aims of the Climbing Outside course are to reinforce the climbing skills learned indoors and expand those skills to address the extra safety and technical issues that are encountered when moving outside. These skills can be taught in a variety of environments depending on ability and aspirations - single pitch, multi pitch, routes with bolt protection or routes with traditional protection.

We normally use a small town called Villaueva del Rosario in Andalucia as our base because it has great access to many different crags that have a full spectrum of climbing styles and grades on offer. The extensive range of crags offer routes with either fixed or traditional protection and the position of the village means that we escape up into the hills if it is hot or head down to the coast if the weather is dodgy.

The advantages of having climbing tuition in Spain is that the weather is generally warmer and drier than that encountered in the UK and this makes the learning experience both easier and more enjoyable.

Silvia is a native Spanish speaker and has good relations with the local climbers and thus knows about a lot of crags that are not available to UK climbers.

Key points of the Climbing Outside course often include:

  • Crag awareness, the environment and potential hazards.
  • Essential rope work: Tying into the rope, belaying using various rope controllers
  • Key equipment used when climbing outside - quickdraws, protection and how to arrange your gear so that you know where to find the gear when you need it.
  • Top rope situations
  • Different types of belays and belay management - neat and tidy is also safe.
  • Advanced belay skills - thinking ahead, when to give slack and when to minimise the amount of rope out.
  • Retreating off a route.
  • Protecting routes - bolts and natural protection. Learn how to choose the correct gear quickly and seat it securely.
  • Finishing routes and getting back down - how to thread the belays safely and communicate with your partner effectively
  • Efficient movement on rock.

We can offer this course on a ratio of 1:1 to 1:2; we could offer a higher ratio, but this would mean more hanging around for clients and less efficient teaching.

We can also provide acommodation in a newly re-built house in the village of Villanueva del Rosario

Dates, venues and duration of all of the climbing courses are by arrangement and totally customisable. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss your requirements.
